Vivid botanical watercolors
Watercolor and Line sells original paintings, archival prints, and notecards featuring original watercolor paintings. We focus on native California plant species to raise awareness and appreciation of these species, which is critical to their preservation.
We partner with other small, local businesses to offer our prints and notecards, and use recycled products for printing and packaging wherever possible.
Why Paint?
Shortly before my 30th birthday, I received a devastating medical diagnosis that upended my life and career and led to a state of permanent disability.
During an extended period of learning to treat and manage my medical condition, I began to teach myself to paint. Today, I am a self-taught botanical artist, working primarily in watercolors. I live in my native state of California, with my husband, 3 cats, and two dogs.
My dogs keep me company when Iām able to go out in search of botanical subjects. And our youngest cat is a constant companion in my home studio, where he has a special sleeping basket.
What to Paint?
My favorite subjects to paint are flowers, particularly those with intricate shapes and / or unusual or vivid colors. I bring my training as a scientist to my painting, trying always to tell a story about the botanical subject's natural lifecycle and growth.
Inspirations
I was and am inspired by both historical botanical artists such as Rory McEwen and Margaret Mee, and more contemporary botanical artists and illustrators than I can list here. Some of my current favorite botanical artists include Rosie Saunders, Asuka Hishiki, Carolyn Jenkins, Anna Mason, Lizzie Harper, and so many others.
